Felt Products

Felt the fabric of yesterday, today and tomorrow: The history of felt can be traced back up to 8000 BC. This probably is the oldest fabric used by mankind since prehistoric time. The word "felt" is derived from Latin, which means, "to beat". Literally felt is made by beating wool fibers or animal hair matted together by steam and pressure without employing conventional method of spinning, weaving or knitting. It is generally a work in 100% wool, scrubbing, pounding and other processes render the tiny hair free from intertwining. Thereafter, the thus rendered independent tiny hair are re inter locked, rather beaten into a complex never to disengage from one another-interlocking of a desirable shape and durable item. Wool, hair and fur are the conventional ingredients of felt. For a fabric with greater resilience, a woven material is required. The yarn for this is acquired from the wool of sheep or goat.

Wool can produce felting even when mixed with other fibers. Unlike bounded fabrics, felts do not require adhesive substance for their production. Woven fibers made of cotton or wool may be felted, making them thicker and more compact. Such fabrics, sometimes called woven felts, resemble true felts and serve many of the same purposes.

In Nepal, felt is made by hand with sheep wool. This unique cloth is made in Nepal from centuries in remote Himalayan villages. Traditionally it is used to make rugs to insulate their homes from extreme cold.

It is one of the widely used fabrics in the modern world with its usage ranging from pen tips to interior insulation. Felt padding is employed in both apparel and furniture. Its trendy, colorful, sturdy yet affordable trait has made it very popular amongst the fashion conscious people today. A well made felt item can last for years, depending upon the use or rough use, unclean use, etc.
